How often should we cut our hair?

Hey guys,

Here’s some advice about hair cutting and how often you should be cutting your hair.

Knowing how often to cut your hair has a lot to do with your hair goals. On average hair grows 1/2 an inch every 4 weeks. Some people’s hair grows faster than the average and others will be slower. But nonetheless the principles around hair cutting are the same. Here’s our top tips on hair cuts and knowing when to get the chop and when to take a little less off the top;

Chemically Processed Hair

Colouring, hi-lighting, perming or chemically straightening hair are all chemical processes which cause hair to break, split and become dry. Frequent hair cuts prevent split ends travelling up the hair shaft, keeping the hair looking stronger, fuller, longer and most importantly healthier. If you notice your hair is breaking and split ends are developing, it is probably time for a cut.

Growing Your Hair

It’s a common myth that regular hair cuts make your hair grow faster! The truth is they allow your hair to grow at it’s full potential. Regular trims help prevent breakages and split ends which will prevent and slow down your hair growth. When growing your hair, regular cuts of 1/2 an inch every 8-12 weeks will help keep the hair growing but still keeping it as healthy as possible.

Cutting Long Hair

If you want to keep your hair long it is important to get regular cuts to keep it looking healthy. Long hair is very old and is typically more prone to breakages and split ends. It also appears thinner. If you are trying to grow your length, hair should be trimmed (1/2 an inch) every 8-12 weeks. If you are happy with your length and don’t want it any longer get at least 1 inch off every 6-10 weeks.

Cutting Short Hair

If you want to keep the style of your short hair looking amazing, typically you will need a cut every 4-6 weeks. Short hair tends to grow out quickly so needs to maintained and tended to a lot more often than long hair. Depending on how short you like your hair you might get away with a cut every 6 weeks. The frequency of cuts on short hair are generally decided by how short (or long) you like the hair and how fast & thick your hair grows yourself.
